A comforting treat for the whole family!

These bright blue Star of David sugar cookies are just the thing for gathering the family in a cozy kitchen for some after-dinner sweets and fun. Mixing, rolling out the dough, and decorating will fill your night with laughter and light – and there's nothing more true to the spirit of Hanukkah than time spent together.

Directions

  1. Preheat oven to 350F. In a stand mixer, beat butter and sugar until creamy. Have your child add vanilla extract and blue food dye, and help them crack an egg into the bowl. (Tip: have your child crack the egg into a separate bowl and then let them pour it into the mixture; this makes retrieving bits of egg shell much easier!) Continue to mix until smooth and add lemon zest if using.
  2. In a separate bowl, sift flour, baking powder and salt. Slowly add dry ingredients into mixer on low speed. Feel free to have your child help with this step!
  3. Start with about a fourth of your dough. Roll it out onto a cutting board dusted with flour until dough is about 1/4 inch thick. With your child's help, cut out the dough with your Star of David or other fun holiday cookie cutters. Repeat with remaining dough.
  4. Place cookies on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper and bake in the oven for 6-8 minutes. Let cool on a cooling rack. When cookies are completely cool, decorate with cookie icing and enjoy!
