Halloween is often synonymous with the sweet treats we all love to give and receive on this special night, but the holiday is even more fun when you extend it to other areas of your life. Take snack time, for example: this spooky snack plate is the perfect way to enjoy a nutritious assortment of fruits, veggies, and other yummy finger foods with your kids as you brainstorm costume ideas and decorate your home for the trick-or-treaters in your neighborhood. Pack this festive fare for a school lunch or munch away at home to get in the spirit!
This Halloween snack plate features simple, everyday ingredients that can easily be transformed with a little bit of knife work and imagination. It includes a well-rounded combination of fruits, veggies, and proteins in the form of Franken-kiwis, cheese brooms, boo-nanas, straw-mummies, clementine pumpkins, and spider deviled eggs. Let's get started!
Time to assemble your snack plate! Here's how to turn everyday ingredients into Halloween themed finger foods:
These clementine pumpkins are the easiest treat to whip up for this Halloween snack plate: just grab a clementine, peel it, and add a piece of celery to the top to create a cute pumpkin stem.
For the cheese brooms, cut a stick of string cheese in half or in thirds. Use a paring knife to slice the "bristles," leaving part of the top intact to hold them together. To finish, insert a mini pretzel stick into the top to create the broom handle.
To make the Franken-kiwis, slice the bottom of a kiwi so that it can stand on one end. Next, peel the kiwi, but leave a bit of the brown peel towards the top. Slice the kiwi in half length-wise to create two Franken-kiwis with the stem on top. Microwave 1/4 cup chocolate chips and a teaspoon of oil in 30 second increments until melted, then pour into a resealable plastic bag. Cut a very small piece of one of the bag corners. Working quickly, pipe a chocolate scar and mouth onto each Franken-kiwi, then pipe two small dots to help adhere the candy eyes. Add small pieces of pretzel sticks to finish.
To make the boo-nanas, peel and slice a few large bananas in half. Use your melted chocolate (see instructions above) to pipe eyes and a ghostly mouth. Be sure to save this one until right before you're ready to serve so that you don't end up with brown ghosts!
To make the straw-mummies, follow the same procedure for melting white chocolate as described for the Franken-kiwis, then drizzle over whole strawberries to create the appearance of mummy bandages. Pipe dark chocolate for the eyes or use mini chocolate chips like I did.
Don't forget to include some deviled eggs on your snack plate for protein! Follow your favorite deviled egg recipe, then grab some pitted black olives to make the spiders. Slice a few olives in half length-wise for the bodies, then slice a couple remaining halves into spider legs. Gently press into the deviled egg filling for a spooky presentation!
