How to make traditional French toast

French toast fanatics, rejoice! Bread and milk or water are the only additional ingredients you need to make traditional French toast on the stovetop with Nellie's Free Range French Toast Mix. When it comes to bread, the sky's the limit—challah, brioche, gluten-free, whole wheat, you name it! For liquid, milk or a milk alternative of any kind works beautifully, as does water. Whether you're using our classic or chocolate flavor, simply follow this equation: 1 serving = 2 slices of bread + 1/4 cup dry mix + 1/3 cup liquid of choice.

Ingredients and tools:

  • Nellie's Free Range French Toast Mix
  • Milk, water, or milk alternative
  • Bread of your choice, sliced
  • Pan or griddle

Directions:

  • Preheat a pan or griddle over medium heat.
  • Combine French toast mix and milk, water, or milk alternative in a shallow bowl, whisking until well combined.
  • Grease your pan or griddle with Nellie's Free Range Unsalted Butter.
  • Dip each slice of bread in batter to coat each side evenly.
  • Place dipped bread into pan and cook on medium heat for 1 minute on each side or until golden brown. If making a big batch, add more butter to the pan as needed.

Serve French toast with warm maple syrup, fresh berries, powdered sugar sprinkled on top, or all of the above!

How to make air fryer French toast sticks

What kid (or adult, for that matter) doesn't love anything that can be dipped in maple syrup or warm chocolate sauce? Using the 2 slices of bread:1/4 cup dry mix:1/3 cup liquid ratio printed on the back of our French toast mix packs, you can make extra crispy and gorgeously golden French toast sticks right in your air fryer. A few tips to ensure that every French toast stick gets nice and crispy: only cook a single layer at a time in your air fryer basket and don't let the bread sit for too long after being dipped. Some air fryers may allow excess batter to drip off below the basket, but you can line the basket with a piece of parchment paper for an easier cleanup.

Ingredients and tools:

  • Nellie's Free Range French Toast Mix
  • Milk, water, or milk alternative
  • Bread of your choice, sliced
  • Air fryer
  • Sheet pan
  • Wire rack

Directions:

  • Preheat air fryer to 375F and place a wire rack over a foil-lined sheet pan.
  • Cut each slice of bread into 3-4 sticks, depending on the size of your bread.
  • Combine French toast mix and milk, water, or milk alternative in a shallow bowl, whisking until well combined.
  • Dip a bread stick in batter to coat each side evenly. Allow excess batter to drip over the bowl for a few seconds, then lay coated stick on the wire rack to continue dripping while you repeat with the remaining bread until you have enough sticks to fit in a single layer in your air fryer.
  • Arrange dipped sticks in a single layer in your air fryer. Air fry at 375F for 4 minutes, then flip the French toast sticks over in the basket and cook for another 3 minutes until crispy and golden brown.
  • If making another batch, begin dipping your second round of French toast sticks in remaining batter after flipping your first batch. Remove cooked French toast sticks and repeat the process with your second batch.

Serve French toast sticks with a small bowl of warm maple syrup, chocolate sauce, or jam for dipping!

How to make sheet pan French toast for a crowd

To cook a big batch of French toast for a crowd, grab a sheet pan and simply scale up the 2 slices of bread:1/4 cup dry mix: 1/3 cup liquid ratio printed on the back of our French toast mix packs. Depending on the size of your slices, a standard 13” x 18” sheet pan will fit about 8 bread slices at once, so you can prep as many sheet pans as needed for your family or brunch guests. Lining your sheet pan(s) with parchment paper makes cleanup a snap!

Ingredients and tools:

  • Nellie's Free Range French Toast Mix
  • Milk, water, or milk alternative
  • Bread of your choice, sliced
  • Sheet pan

Directions:

  • Preheat oven to 375F.
  • Line a sheet pan with parchment paper and grease the parchment by brushing on 1-2 tablespoons melted Nellie's Free Range Unsalted Butter or spraying with baking spray.
  • Combine French toast mix and milk, water, or milk alternative in a shallow bowl, whisking until well combined.
  • Dip each slice of bread in batter to coat each side evenly. Allow excess batter to drip over the bowl for a few seconds, then transfer to prepared sheet pan, leaving at least 1/2” on all sides between each slice.
  • Bake French toast at 375F for 10 minutes, then remove the pan from the oven and flip the slices over (the bottoms should be golden brown). Return French toast to oven and bake for an additional 2-4 minutes, or until golden brown on both sides.

Serve baked French toast for a crowd with a toppings bar! Crowd favorites include maple syrup, fresh berries, mini chocolate chips, nuts, and whipped cream.
