Build-Your-Own Ice Cream Sundae Bar

There's no better time than a July heat wave or uncharacteristically sweltering spring day to throw an ice cream sundae party!

Whether you grab your favorite pint or make homemade ice cream, nothing cools kids down quicker than a couple scoops of that sweet, creamy goodness straight from the freezer. But there's another way you can be cool this summer: by being kind to our planet. Before you go out and grab paper cups or disposable dishware for your sundae bar, think twice—there just might be something in your fridge or recycling bin that you can use instead; something that's planet-friendly, made from 100% recycled plastic, and just so happens to be the perfect shape to hold all the ice cream toppings your heart desires. You guessed it: an empty Nellie's Free Range Egg carton!

Before you go nuts with your favorite ice cream sundae toppings, you'll need to clean out your empty Nellie's Free Range Egg carton thoroughly. A simple combination of soap and warm water will do the trick! Once clean, let the carton dry thoroughly, then fill each "cup" where the eggs usually sit with a different ingredient. The sky's the limit when it comes to toppings, but avoid putting any scalding hot items in the carton (slightly warm hot fudge or caramel sauce is fine). Need some inspiration? Check out the list of ice cream sundae topping ideas below.

Ice cream sundae bar toppings:

  • Rainbow sprinkles
  • Maraschino cherries
  • Mini marshmallows
  • Crushed cookies
  • Diced fresh fruit
  • Gummy bears
  • Chocolate sprinkles
  • M&Ms
  • Walnuts
  • Hot fudge
  • Caramel sauce
  • Strawberry sauce
  • Shredded coconut
  • Mini pretzels
  • Crushed waffle cones
  • Chocolate chips

Once you've had your fill, cleanup is a breeze: simply rinse out your carton and place it in the recycling bin.
